How it all began

If you'd asked either of us four years ago who we'd end up with, neither of us would've said, "An Italian."

It started with a message.

Alex had seen Jenna at the gym a few times and eventually decided to reach out. We started talking, got to know each other, and quickly realized we had something in common. We were both Italian.

Unfortunately, we'd both made the exact same promise to ourselves years earlier: never date an Italian.

So, naturally, we decided we'd just be friends.

As it turns out, that plan didn't last very long.

Since then, life has been a collection of airport boarding passes, spontaneous road trips, and enough trips to Italy that Jenna has officially begun lobbying for a new vacation destination. Alex, unsurprisingly, remains unconvinced.

We also accidentally adopted two dogs.

Well... "accidentally."

Rodeo and Dewey were supposed to be fosters. Everyone told Jenna not to foster them because she wouldn’t be able to give them up. Alex was one of the loudest voices saying absolutely not. Now they're the first thing he talks about and the last thing he checks before bed, and yes... he has a baby camera just to make sure they're okay. Funny how that works.

When it came time to propose, Alex planned everything around one of Jenna's favourite places in the world. A sailboat just off the coast of Tropea. The sun beginning to set. Mount Etna towering in the distance. It would've been hard to imagine a more beautiful place to ask someone to marry you.

There was just one small problem. Alex is terrified of the water... and he can't swim.

The seasickness hit almost immediately. The speech disappeared, getting down on one knee became significantly harder than expected, and Jenna was laughing so hard she was crying because, frankly, Alex looked like he was about to die.

Between trying not to throw up and trying not to fall overboard, the only thing he managed to say was,

"Stop laughing... everyone's watching." as he pulled out the ring.

Jenna always imagined she'd cry during the proposal. She did. Just not for the reason Alex was hoping.

By that point, Jenna had a pretty good idea what was coming anyway. It turns out people aren't nearly as subtle as they think they are when they're trying to keep a proposal a secret.

Looking back, though, we wouldn't change a thing.

It wasn't the flawless proposal Alex had planned. It wasn't the perfectly timed movie moment Jenna imagined.

It was funny, a little chaotic, and completely unforgettable.

Which, if we're being honest, describes us pretty well.

And the rest is history…
